Event Description

Veggie Gardening in the Mountains 101
Think growing your own food in the mountains is impossible? Think again. This beginner-friendly class is designed to show you that gardening at high altitude is different—but absolutely doable with the right knowledge, timing, and plants.

We’ll break down what makes gardening in our region unique—short seasons, cool nights, intense sun, and tricky soils—and walk you through practical, proven strategies that actually work here. You’ll learn how to navigate mountain growing seasons, what vegetables thrive at high altitude, and how to set your garden up for success from the start.

We’ll cover smart plant spacing, basic plant families, and why soil health is key to productive plants. Most importantly, you’ll leave with a clear understanding of what to plant, when to plant it, and how to avoid common beginner mistakes.

This class is education-first, hands-on, and confidence-building—no experience required. Whether you're starting your first veggie bed or troubleshooting past efforts, you'll leave ready to grow a thriving mountain vegetable garden.

What You'll Learn

In this class, you’ll learn how to:

  • Understand why gardening in the mountains is different—and why that doesn’t mean it’s harder

  • Work with our short growing season, cool nights, and intense sun instead of fighting them

  • Know what vegetables grow best at high altitude and which ones struggle

  • Learn when to plant based on mountain-specific seasons and frost timing

  • Space plants properly to maximize yields in limited garden space

  • Understand basic plant families and why they matter for planning and plant health

  • Build a strong foundation with healthy soil so your plants can thrive from day one

  • Avoid common beginner mistakes that lead to frustration and failed crops

Perfect For

This class is a great fit if:

  • You’re brand new to gardening or new to gardening in the mountains

  • You’ve tried growing veggies before and felt confused or discouraged

  • You’re not sure what actually grows well at high altitude

  • You want to understand our short growing season without guesswork

  • You’ve wasted money on plants that didn’t survive

  • You want a strong foundation before diving deeper into veggie gardening

  • You’re looking for clear, practical guidance tailored to mountain conditions

  • You want to feel confident walking into the garden instead of overwhelmed

If you want to stop guessing, start succeeding, and understand why gardening works differently here, this class will give you the clarity and confidence to begin.

I’m Lindsay, co-owner of Wiggle Worm Gardens and a mountain vegetable gardener dedicated to helping you bring the farm-to-table movement to your backyard.

Your garden should be a place where you can slow down and find abundance, balance, and connection.

She takes a more hands own approach helping clients through her edible landscaping company, FSF, which focuses on helping people create beautiful edible gardens which gives you:

A lifelong hobby and lifestyle you can enjoy by yourself or share with others.

An investment in your landscape and an extension of your living space.

An education in growing your own food and caring for the environment, starting at home.

And while our Rocky Mountain soil might make us work harder for our harvest, the rewards are so much sweeter.
